Follow the manufacturer
NREL's O&M best-practice guide says to follow the module manufacturer's cleaning recommendations, and warns against high-pressure water, solvents, abrasives and harsh detergents.
Pure water, soft brushes
We use reverse-osmosis, deionized water with a TDS level below 7, fed through soft brushes made for solar glass. Pure water dries without leaving mineral spots, so no soap or chemicals are needed.
Uneven soiling is a risk
The same guide notes that uneven soiling, such as bird droppings, can lead to localized hot spots. That is why we pair cleaning with bird abatement where pigeons are nesting.
